New Bill Proposes $3,000 Direct Payments to Americans

A new bill in Congress wants to give $3,000 payments to millions of Americans. The proposal has been gaining support from lawmakers, especially those who want to help families struggling with rising costs.

What Is This Bill About?

The bill is called the Make Billionaires Pay Their Fair Share Act. It aims to change how wealthy Americans are taxed and use that money to send cash directly to families who need help paying their bills.

Who Would Get the Money?

If the bill passes, here's who could receive the $3,000 payment:

  • Income requirement: Your household must earn $150,000 or less per year
  • Payment amount: Each person would get $3,000, so larger families would receive more money overall
  • Timing: Payments would go out during the first year after the law takes effect

How Would the Government Pay for It?

This plan is different from the stimulus checks sent out during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those payments added to the national debt. This bill would pay for itself by creating a new 5% yearly tax on billionaires' wealth.

Supporters say the tax would raise enough money to cover the direct payments and also fund other needs like housing, education, healthcare, and childcare.

Will This Bill Actually Pass?

Right now, the chances are low. Congress is divided, and no Republican lawmakers have signed on to support the bill. While progressive Democrats are pushing hard for it, the bill faces a tough road ahead before it could become law.
