October 2026 VA Benefits Guide: Payment Dates, Amounts, and Eligibility Updates

If you rely on Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits, keeping track of deposit dates helps make budgeting much easier.

According to the official schedule published by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, beneficiaries will see two separate payment deposits during October 2026.

Why Are There Two Payments in October?

Because the VA pays disability and pension benefits in arrears, October begins with the payment for September.

The first deposit lands on October 1, while the second deposit arrives early on October 30.

Since November 1 falls on a Sunday, federal benefit guidelines mandate that the VA release November payments on the preceding business day.

How Disability Amounts Are Determined

Monthly disability payment rates depend on your disability rating, which ranges from 0% to 100% in 10-point increments.

Data from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs sets the base monthly compensation for a 10% disability rating at $180.42, while a 100% rating provides $4,085.43.

Veterans evaluated at a 30% rating or higher may receive extra compensation for qualifying dependents, such as spouses or dependent children.

For example, a veteran with a 100% rating, a spouse, and one child receives a total monthly benefit of $4,318.99.

Overview of VA Education Benefit Rates

Education benefit rates vary depending on your program type and your course load during the term.

Full-time university students receive $1,621 per month, while those enrolled at 75% receive $1,281, and 50% enrollment provides $939.

Apprenticeships and on-the-job training programs scale from $1,029 monthly during the first six months down to $259 after 19 months.

If your classes start mid-month—such as October 20—your payment is prorated based on the exact days of enrollment.

Recent Performance and Processing Updates

The VA reported processing over three million disability claims in fiscal year 2026, surpassing its previous annual record.

Additionally, the average decision time for claims dropped to 75.6 days in September 2026, down from 141.5 days in early 2025.

The agency maintains a 94% claims-processing accuracy rate, with over 60% of submitted claims successfully granted to veterans.
